1. Who we are
STARX FAST WIFI provides software that WiFi owners use to sell internet access and collect payments. This policy explains how personal information is handled when you visit our website, create an account as a WiFi owner, or buy WiFi access as a customer.
Two roles. For WiFi owners' own account details, we decide how the information is used. For a WiFi customer's purchase, the WiFi owner decides to sell the access and we run the tools that handle it on the owner's behalf. We also use some of that information for our own duties, such as preventing fraud and keeping financial records. In both cases we are responsible for protecting it as described here.
2. What we collect
If you are a WiFi owner
- About you: your name, business name, phone number, email address, the place your WiFi is, and your password (stored in a scrambled form, so we cannot read it).
- About your business: your routers, prices, plans, vouchers, sales, balance, withdrawals and what you pay us.
- Payout details: the mobile money number or bank account you want to be paid into.
- Messages and support: what you send us, and the text messages the service sends for you.
If you are a WiFi customer
- Your phone number, which you give us to pay and to get your access code.
- Payment records: the amount, plan, time and whether the payment worked. We do not see your mobile money PIN or your card or bank login.
- Device and connection details: an identifier of your device (its MAC address), the address your device uses on the network (IP address), and when you connected, for how long and how much data you used. We use this to give you the access you bought and to stop one code being used by many people.
- Your access code and the messages we send you about it.
We do not set out to read what you do online. The WiFi owner's router may keep its own records, so please ask the owner if you want to know about them.
If you visit our website
- Basic technical details your browser sends, such as your IP address, browser type and the pages you open.
- Small files called cookies. See our Cookies page.
3. Why we use it
- To provide the service: create accounts, take payments, give and end access, pay owners and show sales.
- To keep things safe: stop fraud, abuse and people getting access without paying, and keep the system secure.
- To meet legal duties: keep financial records, answer lawful requests from authorities and follow tax and payment rules.
- To help you: reply to questions, fix problems and tell you about important changes to the service.
- To improve the service: understand what works and what does not, and fix faults.
- To send you news about our service, only if you agree, and you can stop it at any time.
The law asks us to have a proper reason for using information. Our reasons are: it is needed to run the service you asked for, it is required by law, it is a fair business interest that does not override your rights, or you have given your consent.
4. Who we share it with
We never sell your personal information. We share it only where it is needed:
- The WiFi owner, who can see their own customers' purchases and connection records.
- Payment partners, such as mobile money operators, banks and payment processors, so that payments and payouts work.
- Messaging providers, that send access codes and notices by text message.
- Service providers, such as hosting and technical support, who work for us under strict rules and only use information to do that work.
- Authorities and advisers, where the law requires it, to protect people's safety or rights, or to get professional advice such as legal or accounting advice.
- A new owner of our business, if it is ever sold or merged, who must respect this policy.
5. Moving information abroad
Some of our providers, for example hosting companies, may store or process information in other countries. When that happens, we take steps to make sure it is protected to a standard that is suitable under the law that applies.
6. How long we keep it
We keep personal information only for as long as we need it for the reasons above. After that we delete it or make it anonymous. Financial and sales records are often needed for several years by tax and accounting rules, so we keep those for as long as the law requires. Records about suspected fraud may be kept longer to protect other people.
7. Keeping it safe
We use sensible technical and organisational measures to protect information, such as scrambling passwords, limiting who can see what, using secure connections and keeping each WiFi owner's data separate from others. No system is perfect. If there is a breach that puts you at risk, we will tell you and the authorities as the law requires.
8. Your rights
You can ask us to:
- tell you what information we hold about you and give you a copy;
- correct information that is wrong or out of date;
- delete your information, where we no longer need it or are not required to keep it;
- stop or limit certain uses, or move your information to someone else where that applies;
- stop sending you marketing, or take back a consent you gave.
To use any of these rights, contact us. We may need to check who you are first, and we will reply within the time the law allows. We cannot always do what you ask, for example if we must keep a record by law, and we will explain why.
Depending on where you live, data protection laws such as Kenya's Data Protection Act, Tanzania's Personal Data Protection Act, Ghana's Data Protection Act and Nigeria's Data Protection Act give you these rights and let you complain to the data protection authority in your country. We would appreciate the chance to put things right first.
9. Children
Our service is for adults and is not aimed at children. We do not knowingly collect information from children to open accounts. If you think a child has given us information, tell us and we will deal with it.
10. Cookies
We use a small number of cookies to make the website and dashboards work. You can read exactly which ones on our Cookies page.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top shows when it last changed. If we make an important change, we will tell you before it applies.
